Saturday will be a day of unity and celebration at Mt. Calvary Powerhouses Church as Black History Month Fun Day is celebrated.
Activities will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mt. Calvary gym,1875 Speedway Drive.
Butler County NAACP President Michelle Webb said it’s the first time the group has sponsored the event.
There will be activities for all ages, Webb said. Food and drinks will be provided, along with activities for the children, an open mic for the older children, a bounce house, painting and games.
“We want to bring the community together. When we’re thinking about Black History Month, we all think about unity,” Webb said, “We’re like, why not have a fun day where we invite everybody to come out and have a good time. We will have information on Black historical events and even some artwork. The event will allow us to come out and enjoy and appreciate what Black History means.”
She explained there will be information about the NAACP and on historical black leaders’ inventions. It will “give insight in a positive manner on collaborates in all races. People tend to think NAACP is just for a black or a colored person, but our founders were mixed. We had white, we had black, so that’s why we’re celebrating.”
In extending the invitation to the community, Webb said, “If you have the time and can stop by, we’d love to see you and meet with you. If not, there will be more events coming later in the year.”
The NAACP is a civil rights organization in the United States, formed in 1909 as an interracial endeavor to advance justice for African Americans by a group including black, white and Jewish individuals.
