Crews responded twice to a structure fire at 1018 Peach St. in Poplar Bluff on Sunday night. The State Fire Marshal is investigating.

According to the Battalion Chief Stacy Harmon’s report, the first call came in at 6:06 p.m. When the first crew arrived, heavy flames were coming from three sides of the single-story frame structure and threatening structures on two sides of the house. When the third crew arrived, an interior attack was made on the fourth side of the building. The majority of the fire was extinguished at that time.

Due to heat, Harmon called two off-duty fire crews to assist with salvage and overhaul and to deal with incoming calls.

On the first call, firefighters used 10,000 gallons of water.

The last fire crew left the scene the first time at about 8:30 p.m.

Harmon said firefighters were dispatched to the scene again shortly before 11 p.m. when the fire rekindled on the rear roof, where a small fire was smoldering between layers of roofing materials. Firefighters removed the metal roofing to expose smoldering shingles underneath. They extinguished the fire using 50 gallons of water.

The structure is owned by Steven Woody and the occupants were John Murphy and Dominique Thompson.

Responding to assist the fire department were Butler County EMS, Municipal Utilities Water and Electric, Spire Gas and the Poplar Bluff Police Department.

Firefighters included Chad A. Bell, Joshua M. Buhler, Kenneth Felts, battalion chiefs Jeffrey Hale and Harmon, Bradley D. Jones, Jonathan D. Miller, Fire Chief Michael Moffitt, Josh Robinson, Joseph Somers, Tanner Tibbs, Toby Tuggle and Adam Yeley.
