Filing opens Tuesday for municipal and school board elections.

The Poplar Bluff City Council will have three seats up for grabs.

The three-year terms of Ward 5 representative Robert Smith and at-large representatives Steve Davis and Chris Taylor are expiring.

Filing will be open until 5 p.m. Dec. 27. The election will be held April 4.

Davis currently holds the position of mayor, which is decided by the members of the council. A retired probation and parole officer, he is a graduate of Poplar Bluff High School, Three Rivers College and Southeast Missouri State University.

Davis said when he first ran for council in 2017 that he wanted to give back to the community.

Smith has previously served as mayor. He was first elected to the council in 2002, being re-elected until he was defeated in 2014. He was re-elected to the council in 2017.

Smith said in 2017 he believed his background on the council offered a benefit as the city continued to move forward with decisions on the police department and city hall structures.

Taylor was first elected to the council in 2020. She said when running for the position she hoped to bring a common sense approach to the council.

Candidates for city council must be 21 years of age; a citizen of the United States; a qualified voter; an inhabitant of the city for one year; an inhabitant of the ward for which he or she seeks office for one year and if elected continue to live in that ward throughout his or her term on the city council. No one who is in arrears for any tax lien, forfeiture or defalcation in office can be elected.

Persons wishing to file city council may do so at the Office of the City Clerk, 501 Vine St., Poplar Bluff between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the last day of filing, Dec. 27.
