A pair of local residents thanked an area World War II veteran for his service by volunteering to help with the upkeep of his property through the summer and fall.
Navy veteran Wilbur Schmit, 93, was recently treated in urgent care after becoming overheated while using a push mower in the yard at his home.
Wade Stoner, an Air Force veteran, and his son, Austin, learned of this through John J. Pershing VA Medical Center staff, and volunteered their time.
"I try to live by the standard of 'find a veteran and thank them - then find a way to make it up to them.' This is my way of doing that," said Austin Stoner, 14, a freshman in the next school year at Poplar Bluff High School.
The Stoners will take care of the yard work for the rest of season.
"I sure do appreciate it," said Schmit.
