With the first day of classes at Poplar Bluff R-I schools scheduled for Monday, Aug. 21, what better way to lead into the new school year than a Back-To-School Weekend Bash?
Events kick off Friday, Aug. 18 and wrap up Sunday, Aug. 20, said R.T. McCain, a teacher with the R-I district and community organizer.
“We’ve done back-to-school events in the past — and one specifically like this one about five years ago,” McCain said. “It’ll be an all action-packed weekend for kids in the community to come out and enjoy themselves.”
The weekend kicks off with the Back-to-School Pool Party from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18, at the R.W. Huntington Municipal Pool at Hillcrest Park on Second Street. The pool party will include a live DJ, grilled hot dogs and other refreshments.
Festivities continue from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19, at Mini Park near Garfield and Alice streets with the Stop the Violence Basketball Open Run. The Stop the Violence run will include a DJ, grilled hot dogs, bottled water, 3-point contest and dunk contest, as well as speakers speaking against community violence.
The weekend’s events wrap up Sunday, Aug. 20, with the Back-to-School Free Haircuts & Hair-Dos Event from 2-5 p.m. That event will be held at Shear Expressions Salon, located at 2102 Shelby Road. This event will include free services from barbers and beauticians. It will also include music, refreshments, a bouncy house and mentors for any youth in need.
Not surprisingly, McCain enjoys the opportunity to once again give back to his community.
“We mentors, community leaders, and members of the community are proud to collaborate in an effort much bigger than all of us, the fight for the youth,” McCain said.
