Poplar Bluff Mayor Ed DeGaris says requests from residents have convinced him to run again for the Ward 2 seat he has held since 2009.

The retired city police officer filed Thursday for re-election.

"(It was) the number of citizens that have been encouraging me to go ahead and file and run again," DeGaris said. "I'm doing what I think a councilman should do, and listen to the citizens."

DeGaris had previously said he did not intend to file again, as has Ward 4 incumbent Philip Crocker,

DeGaris faces a contest April 3 against challenger Dylan Groves, 23. Groves is an employee at Hicks Animal Hospital.

Only one person has filed for Ward 4, Shane Cornman, 44. Cornman is a minority owner in NBI LLC, a disaster relief and construction company.

Both seats carry a three-year term. The position of Poplar Bluff mayor is chosen by a vote of city council members following the election.

Filing closes Tuesday. Filing can be done from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at Poplar Bluff City Hall, and from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Candidates must be 21 years old, a citizen of the United States and have lived in the ward they are seeking election to for one year. Candidates cannot be in arrears on any tax lien, forfeiture or defalcation in office.
