• The Jaycees pitched eight young turkeys from the third floor of the Butler County Courthouse this afternoon to attract a giant crowd to the downtown section of Poplar Bluff. The idea behind the plan was to bring out the crowds, which would spend money in Downtown shops. Jaycees officers said the stunt was a success because it brought out hundreds of people, many of whom stood in the background and envied those who caught a bird as it came flying down out of the courthouse window.

During the turkey drop, there was one near-fight when a man and a boy both caught one of the bird and the boy yanked it out of the man’s clutches. But overall, the day was a tremendous success, according to the Jaycees. “We’ll have to do it again next year,” one Jaycees member said. “I think it will be worth the money.”

However, the sheriff’s office, the police department and fire department will function as usual.

• More children than were expected were entertained by the Elks’ Santa Claus Monday afternoon (Christmas Eve) and as a result, the supply of toys ran out. However, there were plenty of nickels, boxes of candy and fruit, so none of the children were turned away without a gift. Thirty baskets of food were distributed on Christmas Day by the Elks, with the remaining half a dozen baskets slated to be placed today in homes of the poor, said Elks Exalted Ruler E.M. Robinson.
