• K.R. Becker, vocational agricultural teacher at the high school, will conduct another of his popular short-course sessions Thursday night (Dec. 6) at the Ashcraft School. The subject of study will be insect control. Becker will probably enlist the aid of some of his older boys from his classes who live in the country, who by studying certain subjects in the high school during the week may disseminate his knowledge to area farmers.

• W.L. Phillips and L.W. Twaddle, two farmers living in the Broseley section today filed suit in circuit court against the Butler County railroad, the Missouri Pacific Railroad and the San Francisco railroad company, for a sum of $2,084.32. The suit claims the plaintiffs arranged for the melons to be shipped to Joplin for sale. And while the melons were sold, the plaintiffs received none of the money from the sales.

__Dec. 5, 1973__

• Malden voters resoundingly rejected the city manager form of government in a special election held Tuesday (Dec. 4), with more than 65% of voters (498 out of 766) saying no to the change. A total of 51% of the votes cast would have had to been yes to adopt the measure. Malden currently has the mayor-council form of government.

• The Poplar Bluff Mules boys basketball team won its opener at the Sikeston Invitational Tournament last night (Dec. 4) by defeating New Madrid 56-45. Bruce Dameworth led the Mules with 15 points, while Robert Dodd added 14 in the win. Poplar Bluff will play Dexter in the SIT semifinals Thursday, Dec. 6.
