• In Blytheville, Arkansas, 10 juvenile boys have been arrested for burglarizing a store owned by Chinese immigrants. The arrests happened yesterday (Jan. 29), several days after robbing the Y.G. Fong & Co. store, which declared bankruptcy afterwards.

• Why cook meat and dumplings when you can combine the two? That’s the question posed in the cooking column “Sister Mary’s Kitchen” alongside recipes for “liver balls” and “ham balls” to be served in soups. Readers may draw their own conclusions on why these aren’t common today.

• Downtown Poplar Bluff business owners petitioned in favor of forming a Downtown Special Benefit District to help finance the operation and maintenance of the proposed multi-level parking garage on Broadway Street.

The petition was presented to the Poplar Bluff City Council last night. City Manager David Pence said the signatures represented 78 of the 130 parcels of land in the proposed district, and just over half of all the property owners therein.

The total cost of the parking garage project is estimated at $400,000. The special district would enable the city to levy up to 85 cents per $100 of assessed valuation on property within it, and current merchant licenses could be increased by 50%.
