Stolen goods from separate crimes in two counties were recovered during this week in 1924, and one case led to the arrest of a family of five for multiple burglaries. • Authorities recovered stolen goods this week with bloodhounds and good luck.

In Stoddard County, an entire family was arrested after police dogs followed their scent from a burglarized store in Wappapello to their home in Dale township. Police found over $100 cash and $75 in merchandise from that case, plus goods from other regional burglaries. After a four-day stakeout, sheriff’s deputies arrested the family when they returned from a trip: patriarch John Dare, his sons James and Roy, daughter Irene, and son-in-law Charles Perry.

Meanwhile in Poplar Bluff, a Missouri Pacific special officer found around $200 worth of formal clothing stashed in a sack under a freight car. The officer, named Bunch, said no local clothing stores reported burglaries. He believes the culprits stowed the bag on the rails for safekeeping and planned to ride the train out of town.

• What did students eat in 1974? Food editors recommended parents bake cookie bars or drop cookies, both chocked with walnuts, for a low-hassle snack. Local schools published the week’s menu of fish patties, scalloped chicken with mushroom gravy, imitation hamburger with potatoes, spaghetti, and meatloaf.

For adults, food writers recommended a cranberry and vegetable Jell-O salad served with mayonnaise and greens. This article captured the zeitgeist of the ‘70s by declaring, “Gelatin Salad Is Great Companion.”
