• Butler County farmer Grady Landrum won a Ford touring car in a drawing at the Butler County fairgrounds this afternoon. There were 8,000 people estimated to be there, with much interest in the drawing.
Yesterday afternoon (Sept. 28), Girard Saracini won the drawing for the third pig given away at this year’s Butler County fair.
• Frances Weber donated 100 fiction books to the city library this morning, according to librarian Mrs. J.L. Lindsay. Three other people also donated books to the library this week, making a total of more than 200 books received during the week.
Lindsay said the donations are appreciated since there is a greater need with the start of a new school year.

• The third annual feeder cattle sale of the Southeast Missouri Livestock Producers Association was held yesterday (Sept. 28). One hundred twenty consignors sold 1,185 head of cattle at auction for more than $146,000.
W.F. James, county agent, said a slump in the market on sale day cut down profits considerably.
• The Carter County Fair will open in Van Buren at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 1, with a parade led by the Doniphan band. The parade also will feature floats from all over Carter County. The fair will run through Saturday, Oct. 2, and will feature plenty of free entertainment, carnival attractions and a horse show.

• The Poplar Bluff City Council will consider the proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year when it meets Monday, Oct. 1, at city hall. The council also will consider paving Kentucky and Tennessee avenues between Midland and Division streets, and consider paving Division Street between Tennessee and Kentucky.
Also on Monday’s agenda is an application by Geraldine M. Casey for the transfer of a 5% beer license for the Cottage Inn.
• The Poplar Bluff football Mules’ defense limited Perryville to just three first downs and 78 yards of offense as the Mules won 18-7 at Perryville on Friday night (Sept. 28). Stave Cash scored two touchdowns and Tutti Hayes scored another as the Mules improved to 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in the SEMO North Conference.
