Stoddard County Commissioners continued discussions of the Justice Center chiller and warranty options during a recent meeting

Commissioners decided to move forward with a new chiller for $66,298 as well as look at other warranty options.

Last week, commissioners were presented with a proposal from Langford Mechanical & Sheet Metal, Inc. of Jackson, Mo., which included a new chiller unit and warranty.

The proposal included a cost of $45,240 for a new unit, $1,100 for crane fees and an installation fee not to exceed $11,300.

This proposal also included a five year warranty on the compressor and one year warranty on all other parts and labor.

All three commissioners agreed they would like to see more than a one year warranty when spending that amount of money.

Presiding Commissioner Greg Mathis said he spoke with Joe Zweifel of Trane Company in St. Louis, Mo., and explained the county would like to see a five year warranty granted for parts and labor as well.

The updated warranty put the cost of a new chiller at $53,898, plus the same costs for crane fees of $1,100 and installation not exceeding $11,300.

After calling Rob Langford with Langford Mechanical, he informed the commissioners an additional cost was added for a five year warranty across the board.

Mathis added he would suggest going with the proposal from Langford rather than taking bids and setting the project back another month.

To receive the chiller in a one to two week time frame opposed to five to six weeks, an additional cost of $7,895 would be charged.

According to Langford, since the chiller has been running on half capacity the past couple of weeks during the hot weather, he believed the current unit would be able to "make it."

He predicted the new chiller would arrive by the end of July.

"You have been getting by, but we can't predict the future," Langford said. "I feel like it would be worth trying for that kind of money."

Sheriff Carl Hefner presented proposals to the commission for repairs to a jail door.

Steward Steel Inc., of Sikeston, Mo., quoted $2,693 to build the door while Sides Construction of Jackson quoted $1,950 to install the new door.

Hefner added if the proposition for a new jail is passed in August, this particular door would stay.

Mathis said the commission will look over the bids and let the sheriff know an answer next week.
