Poplar Bluff officials are hopeful that issues with the roof at the Black River Coliseum will be repaired by mid-June.

Work was originally planned to take place in late 2018, but was delayed by cold weather, said Coliseum Director Bobby Godwin.

Sections of the roof were damaged by hail and wind in the fall, Godwin said. An insurance claim was filed and the city received $74,000 from the insurance company.

The work is being done by Reeves Roofing of Malden, which started repairs May 2.

The roofing company said warmer weather was needed to achieve an appropriate seal for repairs, Godwin said.

“The significant damage was obviously at the pool, and also at the edges of the building,” he said. “We saw it at different levels of the building.”

The roofing company is expected to repair all roof damage and any damage inside the facility caused by the leaks, Godwin said. The city is not expected to have any costs beyond a $10,000 deductible.

City manager Mark Massingham said coliseum staff have monitored the damage from the beginning.

“We will do a walk through once the work is complete to make sure everything is completed to our satisfaction,” Massingham said.

Work has been done on the roof over time and the oldest portion is about 10 years old, according to Godwin, who said the building is not experiencing any leaks beyond the storm damage.
