Robert "Bobby" Godwin, who has been manager of the Ozark Ridge Golf Course in Poplar Bluff, Mo., for nearly 17 years, is the new director of the Black River Coliseum.

"We received 34 applications for the position and interviewed five applicants," City Manager Doug Bagby told the Poplar Bluff City Council Monday night.

Godwin graduated from Poplar Bluff High School and Arkansas State University with a degree in finance. He worked eight years in insurance before becoming manager of the city-owned golf course.

Bagby cited Godwin's experienc in handling the golf course budget, managing a public facility and his knowledge of local events.

"We hope Bobby will bring some longevity to the coliseum," Bagby said.

Godwin replaces Randy Mathews, who announced his resignation in the spring after 22 months on the job. Mathews was hired as executive director of the historic Fox Theatre in Hutchinson, Kan. His last day in Poplar Bluff was May 22.

"Bobby will start his new position at the colisum on Aug. 29," Bagby said. "His starting salary will be $55,000."

All the applicants were evaluated by a four-member panel comprised of Bagby, City Clerk Pamela Kearbey, Finance/Personnel Director Mark Massingham and Police Chief Danny Whiteley.

Godwin could not be reached for comment today because he was participating in the U.S. Golf Association amateur qualifying rounds at the Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

Poplar Bluff Park Department Director Clark Allen said Buddy Godwin, Bobby's father, will take over the responsibility of managing the golf course. Buddy has worked at the golf course for 24 years -- seven years as manager and nearly 17 as assistant manager, according to Allen. The manager's position will be discussed at the next park board meeting.
