The August meeting of the Cane Creek Community Club was called to order at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8. After a business meeting, Nancy Wujcik challenged the group to use their brain to learn new things and to do old things in different ways. She also demonstrated ways to exercise, which sharpens mental skills.
During roll call, members told of some of the fun times they have enjoyed. Most recollections involved time spent with family.
Quilts, a decorated pillow and baby blankets were shared during "show and tell."
The next meet is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 13. The group will go out to eat.
The meeting was closed with the club collect and prayer.
In September, the club will be 100 years old. Established September 1917, the club was a University of Missouri extension club called Victory Homemakers. The all-day meetings were held at members' home and included children and husbands. Members learned new skills, made quits for wedding gifts for young girls who were members, and quilted many quilts through the years. Many quilts have been given to families in the community who have had a house fire or other disaster. The men would work cutting wood, making house repairs, and perhaps pruning fruit trees. Members were also leaders for the community 4-H Club.
In the early years, county agents and state home economists were a much needed source of information about new developments for home and farms. While the club is no longer an extension club, Missouri Extension still provided services and helpful information.
Marie Boxx, current member and president, was an early club member as well as her mother, Vera Sparkman.
