A 54-year-old Poplar Bluff bicyclist, injured in an accident before 9:27 p.m. Wednesday at 559 E. Pine Blvd., was airlifted to Mercy Trauma Center in the St. Louis area.
Poplar Bluff Police Patrol Capt. Chuck Harris said the bicyclist apparently was traveling on G Street and entered Business Highway 60 into the path of a vehicle. The victim’s bike was motorized.
Poplar Bluff Fire Department Battalion Chief Stacy Harmon’s report stated, two crews of firefighters were dispatched to the accident scene. When they arrived, they found the victim who had been stuck by a vehicle lying in the road.
The fire crew checked for injuries then controlled the bleeding and aided the patient with breathing until EMS arrived.
Harmon said, “We aided with packaging and loading of the patient. Due to the severity of the patient’s injuries, we had firefighter Austin Armes drive the ambulance for Butler County EMS so they could have their crew in the back of the ambulance to render care. A fire crew followed the ambulance to the Air Evac helipad where the patient was flown to a trauma center.
Other firefighters on the scene were Tanner Tibbs, Joshua Buhler, Kenneth Felts and Jonathan Miller. The fire crews were on the scene for about 30 minutes.
