Budding artists will have several opportunities over the coming months to grow their skills through art education classes at the Margaret Harwell Art Museum.
“I’m so excited. An important mission of the Margaret Harwell Art Museum is art education, and we have some of the finest instruction you’ll find in the country right here,” said museum director Steve Whitworth.
The classes kick off Saturday at the museum annex with a Mother’s Day event taught by Rose Ann Huck.
“You can make a gift of giving your mom a class to paint in, or you can take the class and give the gift of art,” Whitworth said.
The class will last all day and “you will complete what you start that day,” Whitworth said.
A canvas will be provided, as will a box lunch.
The fee to attend the class is $125.
Because of limited space, Whitworth said, it would be best to pre-register for the class.
Whitworth recommends calling him at 573-714-4411 to make sure the class isn’t overbooked.
“It will be a fun day of painting and fellowship,” he said.
Huck also will host other classes later in the year, including a landscapes course in August and small format painting in November.
Beginning June 1 and running four days, well-known artist Don Sahli will teach classes at the museum annex. He also will be the featured artist in June at the museum.
The classes will run from 9 a.m. until noon each day, and the cost to attend will be $325.
“The subject matter will be still life,” Whitworth said, with a focus on color.
Sahli has been featured in “Artists Magazine,” Whitworth noted.
Renowned watercolor artist Paul Jackson will host a “Painting with Dramatic Light in Watercolor” class Aug. 25-27.
Currently, the plan is to hold the class at the Holy Cross Episcopal Church across Main Street from the art museum, but that could change, Whitworth noted.
The one-day classes will run from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. over three days and will have a $350 fee.
“If you’ve ever wanted to get the most out of light, Jackson is the finest watercolor instructor in the world and this will really up your game,” said Whitworth.
Local artist Tara Brown will continue to offer art classes throughout the summer for all ages.
Brown has scheduled ongoing children’s art classes for Tuesday evenings through the summer, though some might be changed to Thursdays because of scheduling conflicts.
The children’s classes will run for seven weeks and cost $95.
Adult art classes also will run throughout the summer on Wednesday mornings. The six-week program costs $95.
In addition, Brown will host pottery classes for all ages at 6 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month. That class will cost $40.
The annual Kidz Art Camp, hosted by Brown and Subrina Berger, will be held June 21-25 at the museum annex.
The classes will feature both morning and afternoon sessions.
The cost will be $80 per student and, Whitworth said, the class is filling quickly.
Those interested can call 573-686-8002 for information or to register.
“It’s just heaven for all this inspiration being generated at the Margaret Harwell Art Museum,” said Whitworth. “We have a top-notch oil painter in Don Sahli, a top-notch acrylic instructor in Huck and the top watercolor instructor in the country in Paul Jackson. Plus, we’ve got great kids opportunities with Tara and Subrina.”
