Filing closed Tuesday for municipal positions with contests for elected positions in Poplar Bluff, Dexter, Puxico and Piedmont.
Several other positions in region towns have only one candidate for open terms, the majority of which are for two years. An election will be held April 2 for city and school offices.
Retired police officer Alonzo “Kit” Skaggs and insurance agent Lisa Armes Parson have both filed for the Poplar Bluff Ward 1 seat currently held by Mayor Susan McVey. McVey did not seek a new term, after about 10 years on the council.
A second seat is open in Poplar Bluff’s Ward 3. Incumbent Barbara Horton was the only person to file for this position.
There are two challengers for Ward 3 in Dexter. Incumbent Frank Killian filed along with Ronald Ahrens. Killian has served since 2013. Both incumbents have also filed for Ward 1 and Ward 2, which are held by Terry Battles and Tim Aslin respectively.
Two people have come forward for Ward 1 in Puxico. Incumbent GS Kilbreth, serving since 2013, will face Matthew Mitchell.
Puxico has five other uncontested positions open.
Rick McLean, mayor since 2013, has filed again for that position. Incumbent Rick Sheren has filed for a second term as the city marshal. Incumbent Patty Cooper, serving since 1993, has filed for another four-year term as city collector.
Incumbent David DeVaughn has filed for a new term as municipal judge, and Harlan Lamb is seeking the Ward 2 seat. Gary Burns currently serves Puxico’s Ward 2.
A contest has also developed for Piedmont mayor. Incumbent Bill Kirkpatrick has filed, as well as challengers Gary Ellis and Roger Middleton. Incumbent Brian Tutterrow has also filed for Ward 1 and incumbent Kyle Allen for Ward 2.
