Springtime is the best season to see baby wildlife all around.
It is also the season us Conservation Agents get the most calls about seemingly abandoned baby animals. I know I have already gotten several calls in Butler County this year regarding baby animals all by themselves with no sign of a parent around.
The good news is that there is a very high chance the baby animal you see is not orphaned. The parent animals spend many hours a day gathering food for their young and therefore cannot always be with them. The parents are also afraid of humans and will steer clear if you are around their babies.
The most important thing to remember is to NEVER pick up or move baby wildlife that you think is abandoned. You will likely cause them more harm than good and could make it impossible for the parent animals to find them. It is also illegal to possess most wildlife without a valid permit.
So next time you see a baby animal in the wild, remember that it has more than likely been temporarily left there by a parent animal and has not been orphaned.
