Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation's Aquatics Supervisor Heather Tuggle is offering American Red Cross Babysitting and Child Care Training and Junior Lifeguard Trainings Aug. 6-9, for youth ages 12 to 14 years old at the R. W. Huntington Municipal Pool.

The American Red Cross is the nation's leader in babysitting classes and child care training - and will prepare youth to be the best sitter in their neighborhood. In fact, 8 in 10 surveyed parents said they would pay more for a trained babysitter who holds Red Cross babysitter certifications. Start your babysitting business on the right foot and learn how to be a safe, professional and reliable sitter.

Designed for new babysitters the Red Cross child care training course will allow youth to gain the skills necessary to care for kids of all ages. It will help participants develop leadership skills, build their business, help keep themselves and others safe, learn basic child care and basic first aid. The course will be taught according to skill level. The training will be from 8 a.m. to noon, Monday, Aug. 6 through Thursday, Aug. 9. Cost is $45.

Junior Lifeguard helps build a foundation of knowledge, attitudes and skills for future lifeguards. This class has a strong focus on developing swimming skills to help participants meet the Lifeguarding course prerequisite. The course also introduces participants to lifesaving skills, such as in-water rescues, use of a rescue tube, and first aid. CPR and AED. Participants also have the opportunity to shadow lifeguards in rotation to get a real sense of being on the job. Junior Lifeguard will be held at 1-5 p.m., Monday, Aug. 6 through Thursday, Aug. 9. Cost is $45.

Note: Babysitting and Junior Lifeguard can be combined for a total cost of $100. Participants will stay at Huntington Pool each day until 5 p.m. Morning/afternoon snacks and lunch will be provided for participants enrolled in both classes.
