Local volunteer, Angie Martin, Poplar Bluff, was recently recognized for countless hours of service to the community during a Modern Woodmen of America member event on June 27.

Martin was honored through Modern Woodmen's Hometown Hero Program for her many years of fostering children.

Martin is a lifelong Butler County resident and an active member of Fellowship Baptist Church. She and her husband, Jim, have a blended family of 7 children ranging from ages 7 to 33.

Martin decided many years ago to begin advocating and caring for numerous foster children, she has been a foster parent for more than 25 years. She not only gave the children a good home, she gave them her whole heart as well. She said she fell in love with every child at first sight.

Martin enjoys Bible studies and painting. he also loves spending time with her family and friends.

In April of 2016, she was diagnosed with Stage IV metastic breast cancer. She still keeps a smile on her face, along with a hopeful and positive attitude and is an inspiration for all. Martin is currently under the care of Preferred Hospice.

As part of the Hometown Hero Program, members of the Poplar Bluff Modern Woodmen Summit chapter presented Martin with a certificate and a $100 award grant to be donated to the charitable organization of the honoree's choice. Martin selected St. Jude Children's Hospital to receive the donation.
