POPLAR BLUFF FIRE DEPARTMENT
Firefighters were dispatched at 12:41 a.m. Saturday, May 21, to the area of Fifth and Mary streets for a structure fire.
According to the report, upon arrival they observed fire on the front porch of 408 Mary and smoke coming from the building.
A firefighter used the bumper line to spray the fire from the front porch while another firefighter walked around the structure. The original fire was nearly extinguished. After kicking in the structure door, there was still quite a bit of smoke coming from inside the bedroom but little to no fire extension past the area of origin. After spraying a small amount of water on the remaining hot spots, the other crews arrived and proceeded through the structure to conduct a primary search of the structure to ensure that nobody was inside.
Firefighters asked the state fire marshal be contacted and a Poplar Bluff Police Officer documented the scene with photographs. Firefighters finished clearing the house of smoke with a positive pressure fan, checked for any remaining hot spots, did a walk through with the gas company employee, and then cleared the scene. They used 100 gallons of water.

The crew made contact with the home owner who showed them a bedroom on the first floor on the B-side of the house where there was light smoke in the room. Light smoke was coming from under the baseboard. Crews used a halligan bar to make a hole in the wall to look for the fire and had the water-can. The fan was put at the front door to push out the smoke. Crews worked in the bedroom and went to the basement to check for fire below the bedroom. The crew in the bedroom did find a few embers and used the water-can to put them out. Crews also used the thermal imaging camera to look for hot spots. Spire Gas and Municipal Utilities pulled the meter turning off power to the house. Owner Micheal Botkin was advised to have the wiring checked by an electrician before having the power turned back on to the house. Two gallons of water were used.

After firefighters completed a walk around the house, Missouri Utilities cut the service entry cable from the pole allowing the limb to finish dropping to the ground. After the power was shut off and there were no other hazards, a firefighter climbed onto the roof to scan the area of arcing with the thermal imaging camera to ensure that there was no fire present.
