Two people were injured in a three-vehicle accident at 11:35 a.m. Tuesday, July 19, on U.S. Highway 62, one-fifth of a mile east of Malden.
According to the report, Lewis R. Melton, 83, of Poplar Bluff was operating a 1991 Peterbilt westbound when it pulled into the path of a southbound 2017 Dodge Ram operated by Jessie E. Merriman, 69, of Poplar Bluff. Melton’s vehicle then struck a northbound 1998 Ford F-150 operated by William O’Bryant, 61, of Clarkton.
Melton sustained moderate injuries, while Merriman sustained minor injuries. Both were transported by ambulance to Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

Matthew A. Lawson, 50, of Malden was arrested at 9:37 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, in Dunklin County on suspicion of DWI (alcohol), driving while revoked and careless and imprudent driving. He was released.

A 57-year-old man was killed in a one-vehicle accident at 7:56 p.m. Saturday, July 23, on Highway A, two miles west of Dutchtown in Cape Girardeau County.
According to the report, James P. Edmonds, 57, of Marble Hill was operating a 2016 Harley-Davidson westbound when it ran off the right side of the road and struck and embankment, ejecting Edmonds in the process.
Edmonds was transported by Cape County Ambulance to Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, where he was pronounced dead at 9:10 p.m. He is the 35th fatality in Troop E this year.

He was released.

A 37-year-old man sustained minor injuries in a two-vehicle accident at 7:30 a.m. Monday, July 25, on Business U.S. 60, two miles east of Poplar Bluff.
According to the report, Bethany G. Hughes, 34, of Puxico was operating a 2004 Honda Pilot westbound when it struck the rear of a westbound 2016 Ford F-650 operated by Tony Womack, 37, of Poplar Bluff.
Womack was transported by private convenience to Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

A 66-year-old man sustained moderate injuries in a one-vehicle accident at 10:50 a.m. Monday, July 25, on Highway D, 10 miles south of Dexter.
According to the report, Ronnie G. Williams, 66, of Bernie was operating a 2016 Peterbilt 365 eastbound when it ran off the right side of the road, over corrected and overturned.
Williams was transported by ambulance to Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

According to the report, Jerika B. Chilton, 20, of Van Buren was operating a 2019 Polaris Ranger southbound when it traveled off the right side of the road and struck a sign.
Chilton was transported by private vehicle to Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

During the traffic stop it was determined that six bottles of liquor found in the vehicle were stolen from Walmart Neighborhood Market. Darrell Brown was arrested on a Butler County warrant for shoplifting, while Kasey Brown was arrested on suspicion of stealing. Both were booked at the Butler County jail.

Officers responded to a domestic assault at 2:49 a.m. Thursday, July 28, at a residence in the 3000 block of Elaine Avenue. The suspect fled the scene prior to officers arrival. A black bag containing a large quantity of suspected marijuana and a pistol left at the scene were seized. The investigation continues.

A woman reported at 12:28 a.m. Sunday, July 31, she was assaulted by an adult male acquaintance in the 1400 block of South 12th Street. Officers were unable to make contact with the suspect, and a criminal summons for assault was mailed to his address.

An adult female reported she was attacked by her boyfriend at 2:30 a.m. Sunday, July 31 in the 3000 block of Warrior Lane. The suspect reportedly struck her in the head with a pistol during the assault, and left the residence before she called the police. EMS was called to the scene, but the victim declined medical attention.
A short time later the suspect’s vehicle was seen traveling east on Highway PP. The vehicle fled south on U.S. Highway 67, and ran off the road at Highway M. The driver escaped on foot. His vehicle was impounded and firearms and ammunition were seized. The investigation continues.

Officers responded at 7:01 a.m., Sunday, July 31, to the 1500 block of North Main Street for a report that two subjects exchanged gunfire during an argument. One of the suspects was identified as Lonnie Ruff, 19, of Poplar Bluff. Ruff was arrested during a traffic stop a short time later on suspicion of unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a defaced firearm. He was booked at the Butler County jail. The investigation continues.

Joshua Stebbins, 36, of Poplar Bluff, was arrested a 1:42 p.m. Sunday, July 31 during a traffic stop on Ridge Street on Poplar Bluff municipal failure to appear warrants for traffic offenses. Stebbins was unable to post bond but he was released on his own recognizance.

Officers responded at 2:17 p.m. Sunday, July 31 to a residence in the 1000 block of Kinzer Street for a report of a domestic assault involving a knife.
Mark Coger, 30, and Jasmine Holloway, 25, both of Poplar Bluff were arrested during the investigation. Coger was booked on a charge of resisting arrest and was booked at the Butler County Jail. Holloway was booked on a Butler County warrant for first degree burglary and Poplar Bluff municipal failure to appear warrants for stealing, plus suspicion of possession of amphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. She was booked at the Butler County jail.

Pomeroy was unable to post bond but she was released on her own recognizance.

Officers responded at 11:41 p.m. Monday, Aug. 1, to the 1600 block of Spring Street for a report of a white male tampering with vehicles. When they approached the white male, he fled the scene in a silver Chevrolet passenger vehicle. The officers initiated a traffic stop, but the driver refused to stop. The driver was later identified, and the investigation continues.

Firefighters responded at 10:53 a.m. Friday, July 8, to a dumpster fire at 4803 West Blvd., behind JD’s off Highway PP. According to the report, the crew pulled the booster and put out the fire using 30 gallons of water. Butler County Fire was notified the call was in the county, the fire was out and they did not need to respond. The dumpster, which is owned by Shular Trash Company, belonged to 4803 West Blvd.

Firefighters responded at 5:59 p.m. Friday, July 8, to 2049 Greenwood for an alarm system sounding. No signs of fire were present. According to the report, the crew opened the Knox box and the alarm showed zone 10 pull on the third floor. After checking all pull stations and making an extensive search of the building, it was determined the system sounded due to a malfunction. The manager could not reset the system so it was taken out of service.

Firefighters responded at 9 p.m. Friday, July 8, to an alarm sounding at Goodwill. According to the report, nothing was found on arrival. They used the Knox box key to enter the building and the dispatcher asked the key holder to respond. They went through the entire building and nothing was found. The alarm had sounded multiple times over the last few days and has been taken out of service.

Firefighters responded at Sunday 3:55 a.m. Sunday, July 10, to an alarm system sounding at 305 N. Eighth St. for a reported gas leak. According to the report, the fire crew checked the residence and picked up zero readings on air monitors. The residence had no gas appliances. Nothing further outside the residence was located.

Firefighters responded at 2:07 p.m. Sunday, July 10, to Oak Grove and Shelby roads to assist with a patient in a vehicle. According to the report, upon arrival they located a single vehicle in the middle of the roadway and a bystander assisting the driver, who had a medical condition. They cared for the driver until EMS arrived a short time later. When EMS loaded the patient for transport, the firefighters cleared from the scene.

Firefighters responded to a report of a UPS truck on fire at Taco Bell South 108 S. Westwood Blvd. at 3:35 p.m. Monday, July 11. According to the report, upon arrival nothing was showing. The Butler County Sheriff’s Department deputy already on the scene said the truck was smoking bad when he made a stop on the truck and called for the fire department to respond. A Poplar Bluff police officer arrived on the scene. After checking the UPS truck, they found a large amount of oil coming from the engine area underneath the truck, but found no fire. They believe the oil had gotten onto the exhaust and caused the smoke that was seen. A tow truck was called and all units cleared the scene.

Firefighters responded at 10:07 a.m. Tuesday, July 12, to a reported dumpster on fire at 900 Ida Street with a small amount of trash inside. According to the report, the crew used the booster line and 20 gallons of water to extinguished the fire. There was no damage to dumpster.

Firefighters responded at 3:28 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, to a building fire at 1709 Wilson St. According to the report, while en route dispatch advised the front porch was on fire. Upon arrival firefighters saw debris smoldering in the front yard with no visible smoke coming from the structure. Fire personnel removed soffit and straw from the porch roof that had charring. The booster line and 30 gallons of water were used to cool down hot spots in the roof area of the porch. Occupants stated they had a candle hanging from the porch and it caught the roof on fire. The soffit area of the porch had straw and other natural vegetation that appeared to have been placed by wildlife. The flame from the candle caught straw and vegetation in the soffit on fire and melted the vinyl soffit and charred the wood ceiling of the porch. The thermal imaging camera was used to look for fire spread in the roof of the porch.

Firefighters responded at 3:41 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, to 204 N. Eighth St. in the area of Pine Street for smoke in the area. According to the report, the crew found an authorized controlled burn. Contact was made with a resident, Mike Mattingly, who was in the yard with a water hose attending the fire. The resident was informed he was in no violation of city ordinance and the fire would have to be extinguished by dark. The crew cleared the scene.

Firefighters responded at 4:18 p.m. Thursday, July 14, to an alarm in the 1000 block of Cole Avenue. According to the report, they found a car on fire beside 1050 Cole Avenue which appeared to have caught fire from lumber burning in front of it. A lawnmower at the side of 1054 Cole Avenue had melted from the grass burning which appeared to have caught from a trash pile and had damaged the building at 1054 owned by Christoper Crocker and Mack Campbell. Firefighters used 400 gallons of water on the multiple area.

Firefighters responded at 4:31 p.m. Thursday, July 14, to a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of 10th and Lester streets. According to the report, all the occupants were out of the two vehicles and there were no injuries. One crew remained at the scene to provide traffic control until the roadway was clear.

Firefighters responded at 6:11 p.m. Friday, July 15, to a grass fire in front of Chin Restaurant, 929 S. Westwood. Blvd. According to the report, fire personnel used a booster line and 15 gallons of water to extinguish the fire.

Firefighters responded at 4:41 a.m. Saturday, July 16, to 911 N. Second St., to light smoke and light haze in the kitchen and basement areas. According to the report, firefighters checked all electrical appliance and outlines, breaker box and found the central HVAC was frozen in the interior A-coil and compressor on the outside. They shut off the power to the unit on the inside and outside. They advised to have the unit cleaned and repaired before power was turned back on. Firefighters responded at 12:44 p.m. Saturday, July 16, to 2412 Covington Meadows to a natural vegetation fire. According to the report, there was smoke and ashes in the air. They found grass and evergreen trees on fire. They used a booster line to extinguish the fire, which was at 2307 Covington Meadows. Someone had cut some of the evergreen trees and was attempting to burn the limbs, and was unsuccessful. He left the residence and the limbs finally caught. Firefighters responded to Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center Behavioral Health, 2620 N. Westwood Blvd., at 8:43 p.m. Saturday, July 16, to an alarm sounding. According to the report, they met with security who said the alarm was malfunctioning and it had been reset. Since the alarm had been reset, firefighters were not able to determine the origin so they asked the alarm not be reset until they arrived.

According to the report, someone had started a fire on the front porch and a small wood fire in the rear of the house. They used the booster line and one gallon to extinguish the fire on the porch and 20 gallons to put out the fire in the rear of the house. Poplar Bluff Police also were at the scene.

Firefighters responded a two-vehicle motor vehicle accident at 11:39 a.m. Sunday, July 17, in the southbound lanes of 551 N. Westwood Blvd. According to the report, there was no entrapment so fire crews assisted Butler County EMS in loading three patients for transport. Fire crews stayed until after the roadway was clear.

Firefighters responded to Three Rivers College Crisp Technology Center to an alarm system activation at 10:44 a.m. Tuesday, July 19. According to the report, they were met with an alarm technician who had been testing the system and activated the alarm. The monitoring company had been notified of the testing but the fire department had been dispatched any way.

Firefighters responded at 2:52 p.m. Thursday, July 21, to 2620 N. Westwood Blvd. to a system malfunction in the boiler room. According to the report, firefighters were met by maintenance personnel, who stated there are issues with a sensor in the boiler room. They had disconnect it to be able to keep the system activated. The alarm company was scheduled to work on it again the next day.

Firefighters responded to a motor vehicle accident with injuries at 2:09 a.m. Saturday, July 23, to South Westwood and Kanell boulevards. According to the report, Poplar Bluff Police Officers were already on the scene and all occupants were out of the vehicles. Firefighters stood by until the vehicles were cleared from the roadway.

Firefighters responded at 6.53 p.m. Saturday, July 23, to a fire at 1002 Davis St. According to the report, the fire had been put out by a resident using a garden hose. Poplar Bluff Police Department and Butler County EMS also responded. The resident had been burning leaves and limbs when the grass caught fire, the grass ignited the fence on fire. Fire crew made sure all the fire was out before they left.

Firefighters responded at 9:29 p.m. Sunday, July 24, to a fire at 1403 Vine St., which is a wooded and grassy lot behind Skate City. According to the report, fire personnel used a leaf blower and a booster line to extinguish the fire. There was old furniture and trash that appeared to have been set on fire. The fire had spread to the tall grass. Firefighters used 150 gallon of water to put out the fire.
