Firefighters responded at 6:36 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, to a gasoline spill in the basement of 618 N. Eighth St.

According to Battalion Chief Jeffrey L. Hale, the basement was flooded and the house was filling with fumes. Firefighters went to the basement where the fumes were stronger. They set up ventilation fans and evacuated the house. They removed two fuel cans from the basement.

The occupant, Yvette Mallory, was informed she needed to find a place to stay while the fumes cleared. The owner, Mike Botkin, was contacted and advised the water needed to be pumped from the house. Hale shut off the main breaker to the house.
