City firefighters responded at 9:53 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, to a report of smoke in the 1411 Highland Drive residence owned and occupied by Robert Powell.
According to the report, Powell showed firefighters a utility room where he had seen smoke coming from the ceiling area.
When firefighters checked the area using the department’s thermal-imaging camera, they found heat in that area, as well as above a bathtub in an adjoining room.
The bathtub reportedly had a flush-mounting light above it.
Firefighters reportedly used a pike pole to removing the ceiling covering from the area above the tub and found smoldering embers.
Firefighters then removed a section of the ceiling in the bathroom to gain access to the attic and used 20 gallons of water to put out the smoldering insulation and wood framing.
Municipal Utilities and gas company personnel responded and shut off service to the home.
