City firefighters responded at 6:33 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, to a smoke detector sounding at 513 S. Ninth St., owned by Don McGruder.

According to the report, a neighbor told firefighters she heard the detector sounding in an adjacent apartment and called the property manager.

Firefighters were told one burner was found on, and it was turned off.

Firefighters found a rag had been left in the oven, which is what caused the detector to sound.

Firefighters turned off the gas to the stove.

City firefighters responded at 4:37 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, to a report of smoke in the area of the intersection of Mulberry and Nooney streets. It was investigation only.

City firefighters responded at 9:38 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, to a report of smoke coming from the attic at the 724 Maud St. residence owned by Carolyn Shelby.

According to the report, firefighters found steam coming from the ridge vent on the roof.

Firefighters also found the vents to the furnace and water heater had been removed and roofed over, causing them to vent into the attic.

Firefighters told Shelby to have the units vented properly and to get a carbon monoxide detector for her home.
