City firefighters responded at 8:39 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, to a report of a structure fire at the 906 Henderson St. residence owned by Greg West.
According to the report, firefighters found light smoke coming from the front door of a single-story ranch house.
Firefighters entered with the department’s thermal-imaging camera (TIC) to make sure no one was inside and to find the source of the smoke.
The TIC picked up a heat signature in the floor next to the oven.
Firefighters reportedly attempted to get into the crawl space, but were unable to do so due to the duct work.
Firefighters cut a small hole along the wall in the kitchen to gain access to the area that was burning.
A big section of plastic moisture barrier was found melted and smoldering by firefighters. It was discovered the hot water heater drain’s pop-off valve was leaking water down on the electric line, causing it to short and catch the plastic on fire.
Power was shut off to the water heater and oven.
West was notified, and the occupants were told to stay somewhere else until repairs could be made.
