Helen Loucille (Shrum) Cable, age 100 years, 10 months, 16 days of Shook, Missouri, passed away Dece. 16, 2024, at Westwood Hills Health & Rehabilitation Center in Poplar Bluff, Missouri.

Helen was born Jan. 27, 1924, to Harry Roscoe and Mittie May (Mullins) Shrum in Shook. Helen was united in marriage to James S. Cable, April 21, 1953, in Piggott, Arkansas. He preceded her in death April 27, 1994. He was the former Circuit Clerk/Recorder of Deeds of Wayne County.

Helen grew up in the countryside on Lost Creek in Wayne County. She attended the Pine Grove School in Shook, then attended Greenville High School until graduation. After graduation from high school, she attended Mineral Area Junior College and Southeast Missouri University where she received her teaching certificate and taught second grade elementary at Greenville, for 34 years. She retired on July 1, 1982.

She was a devoted wife and enjoyed farming, working in her garden, canning, quilting, working crossword puzzles, watching soap operas, and caring for her peacocks, and stray dogs. She was known by all as a strong, hard-working, and very active person. She supported numerous charities and will be dearly missed. She was a blessing to all those that knew her and those that loved her.

She was a lifelong resident of Shook. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her loving husband of 41 years; six brothers, Roscoe Shrum, James Shrum, Lester Shrum, Fred Shrum, Willis Shrum, and Harold Shrum; three sisters, Velma Helm, Lena Jones, and Trella Helm. Helen is survived by her sister, Betty Lapka of Fairview Heights, Illinois; and sister-in-law, Audrey Shrum of St. Louis. In addition, she is survived by many nephews and nieces.

Visitation was Thursday, Dec. 19, 2024, at Ruegg Funeral Home Greenville Chapel. Funeral service was held at 1 p.m. also in the Greenville Chapel. Bro. Kenny Burchard ministered to the family. Chris Shrum, Chester Shrum, Jerry Shrum, Billy Shrum, John Helm, Dennis Lapka and Eddie Johnson served as pallbearers. Burial followed in Shiloh Cemetery, Shook.
