Wendell Paul Hubbs Jr., 100, of Jefferson City, Missouri, passed away peacefully Friday, Dec. 6, 2024, at Primrose Retirement Community, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Dec. 4, 1924, in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, a son of Wendell Paul Sr. and Ruby Hazel (Hill) Hubbs. He was married Dec. 21, 1947, in the First Methodist Church in Poplar Bluff to Myra Jo Bollinger.

Wendell proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II, stationed in the South Pacific. His time in the military deepened his love for America and instilled in him a profound sense of patriotism. He often spoke of his service with pride, cherishing the bonds he formed with his fellow sailors and the values of duty and sacrifice he carried throughout his life.

Upon returning to the United States, Wendell completed his education at Poplar Bluff High School. He went on to attend the University of Missouri, where he earned a Master’s Degree in Education. Wendell began his career as a high school teacher and coach in Sikeston, Missouri, where he inspired and mentored countless students. Later, he transitioned to a role with the Missouri State Highway Department, beginning as an engineer inspector. Over the course of 35 years, Wendell’s hard work and commitment saw him rise through the ranks, eventually retiring in 1987 as the Assistant Accounting Director, leaving a legacy of excellence and dedication.

Wendell found immense joy in spending time surrounded by God’s creation, finding peace and purpose in the beauty of the natural world. He had a passion for gardening, cultivating everything from vibrant roses to bountiful fruits and vegetables. While he wasn’t a fan of blue jays or pesky squirrels, he delighted in watching hummingbirds. Golf was another way Wendell connected with the outdoors, playing rounds at Meadow Lake Acres, Redfield, and even the iconic Pebble Beach.

Above all, Wendell treasured his family. He loved traveling with his wife, Myra, embarking on RV adventures to both the West and East Coasts, and hiking in breathtaking locations like Glacier National Park and other cherished national parks. Wendell’s greatest joy came from spending quality time with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even his great-great-grandchildren, making sure everyone had a nickname and creating a legacy of love and unforgettable memories.

Wendell was a man of deep faith, whose life reflected love, kindness, and unwavering generosity. His humble nature and quick wit endeared him to everyone he met, always leaving those around him with a smile or a hearty laugh. Wendell’s warmth and sincerity made him a beacon of light in the lives of his family and friends, and his presence will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He is survived by his loving wife of 77 years, Myra; daughters, Linda “Ninnie” Teaters (Rodger Lubben), and Barbara “Beep Beep” Walker; grandchildren, Brent Iven, Daniel Adam Walker “Doodlebug” (Wendy), and Joshua Paul Walker “Toadiefrog” (Brittney); great-grandchildren, Sydney, Jami, Jake, Seth, Katlyn Dang (Happy), Jayden, Cierra, Deaken, Gauge, Justyce, Cannon, Millie, and Emery; great-great-grandchildren, Mia, Zara, and Atticus; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of family and friends.
