Homer Whelchel

Homer Emerson Whelchel, 101, of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, went to his heavenly home Oct. 5, 2024, surrounded by his daughters.

Homer was born Oct. 24, 1922, to William and Ethel Whelchel in Harviell, Missouri.  June 5, 1943, he married the love of his life, Juanita Reeves. The were married 77 years until her death in 2020.

Homer was raised in Hopson Valley, Arkansas, then moved to Corning, Arkansas and in 1958, they moved to Poplar Bluff.

He served in the U. S. Army from January 1945 to June 1946 as a Tec 4  Sergeant.  He was a World War II Veteran with a Honorable Discharge.

Homer was a member of the Bluff City Apostolic Worship Center. He was a retired rice and soybean farmer and a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Homer is survived by three daughters, Sherry Rommel and Althea Whelchel of Poplar Bluff, and LaDonna Cordell of Bowling Green, Kentucky; one brother, Bill (Linda) Whelchel; Bob Moore, son-in-law, Bob Moore; nine grandchildren, Bobby (Kim) Moore, Rodney (Kimberly) Moore, Terry (Rhonda) Moore, Rusty (Sara) Moore, Scott ( Leigh Anne) Rommel, Steve (Melanie) Rommel, Misti (John) Carrigan, Chad (Jamie) Cordell, and Derek Cordell; 25 great-grandchildren, 19 great-great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.

Homer was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Juanita; one daughter, Peggy; one son, Kenny; two sons-in-law, Joe Rommel, and Larry Cordell; one great-great-grandson, Brantley Cordell; five sisters and three brothers.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, 2024, at the Bluff City Apostolic Worship Center in Poplar Bluff. Funeral services will immediately follow beginning at 1 p.m. with Bishop Jerry Williams officiating. Burial will take place at Memorial Gardens following the services.
