Thank you for supporting youth literacy
We want to take a moment to thank the Butler County Community Resource Council, Altrusa and Poplar Bluff Library, and Poplar Bluff Parks & Recreation for all they do to promote children’s literacy.
There are multiple events being held over this weekend aimed at promoting reading among children.
The ability to spend time with your children, and provide them with tools and activities that support their language development can depend on the community that you live in and the resources available, according to the Little by Little Program, a school readiness program organized through WIC.
“Families living in communities with fewer resources and less long-term investment have more barriers to engaging their children in early literacy activities. The differences are quantifiable early and can lead to a 30-million-word gap (the number of words a child has been exposed to) by age 3,” program leaders report. “The effects of this word gap persist as children enter kindergarten. Children from families with a lower income have been shown to perform below their peers and remain behind throughout their school years.”
On Thursday, the CRC and park department partnered to hold Roll & Read. It brought families out to Hendrickson Park for an event focused on reading, with a book give away and crafts built around reading.
Altrusa is hosting a fundraising car show this weekend that will benefit their giveaway of books at Santa Land in December. They are also hosting a book giveaway and story time at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, also at the main branch, in honor of International Literacy Day. This event includes a book distribution, compliments of Altrusa, and a reading of the “Very Hungry Caterpillar.”
Library story times in September will be held each Tuesday, starting at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 10 and 10 a.m. Sept. 17 and 24. These are held at the main branch.
Next Tuesday will feature a new picture book based on the song Dream Weaver by Gary Wright, following a little boy’s dream of a train taking him to the moon.
Dawn Prim will be the guest storyteller Sept. 17 and 24, and invites children to bring their favorite stuffed animal for games and sing-alongs.
Thank you to everyone who is helping introduce our children to a love of a reading, a habit that will serve them well for their entire lives.
