Skip taking sides, get the work done
Sleep In Heavenly Peace did something amazing Aug. 10. The non-profit built 150 beds for children in need. This past week they began delivering those beds.
It’s incredible to think of 150 beds being built from scratch in just a day. Supplies were gathered, planks of wood sanded, and the pieces assembled in stages to create something with the power to change lives. Not just by providing a place to sleep but through the impact of knowing others care.
The scope of the task is certainly amazing. But that isn’t the only noteworthy accomplishment. The one-day build brought together over 150 volunteers.
Approximately 75% of those were first-time volunteers for the group.
Among these volunteers, some were Baptists, some were Catholic, some weren’t churchgoers, some were Democrats, some were Republicans, and some don’t identify as a political party. They were of all ethnicities, ages and socio-economic backgrounds.
They faced a task not by first asking, "Which side are you on," but instead, "What needs to be done?" What if we carried this approach to other problems we’re facing, like health care costs, inflation, housing needs and more?
How much more could we accomplish in just a day?
