The Poplar Bluff Technical Career Center selected Joseph (Jody) Cochran as its Teacher of the Year. Cochran is the lead instructor for all things construction and has been PBTCC’s Teacher of the Year twice before.

PBTCC Computer Science Instructor Michael Barett described him as, “a leader in the classroom and in the community.”

He praised Cochran’s ability to reach out to the various industries in the area to make connections for his class. He has taken an active role in the SkillsUSA competition and oversaw the teaching of its curriculum.

Instructor Dan Parker said, “Jody demonstrates a deep understanding of various instructional strategies, including differentiated instruction, project-based learning, (and) cooperative learning.”

Parker also noted Cochran’s eagerness to help him as a new instructor.

“Jody has always been the person I’ve turned to for guidance,” he added.

Since joining PBTCC in the 2014-2015 academic year, Cochran’s class has constructed four houses from the ground up. Health Occupation

Instructor Amy Crites remarked, “His tireless work ethic and passion for imparting knowledge are evident in every aspect of his teaching.”

She expressed gratitude for Cochran’s continued mentorship and leadership.

Local resident Marvin Miller wrote to PBTCC when he heard Cochran had been nominated to say, “I could tell the way the students were listening and attentive to his teaching that he was a good teacher.”

Parent Tammy Deken said her two sons gained a sense of purpose and drive from the Building Trades Program.

“My boys have taken the skills, knowledge, and integrity not only taught but also molded by Mr. Cochran and are self-supporting adults,” she elaborated.

Ryan and Alicia Davis said Cochran has a heart for teaching and takes an interest in his students.

“He really does care about these kids and does a great job empowering them and instilling confidence,” they noted.

Former student Nicholas Deken affirmed, “I believe if it weren’t for his class I would not have the job I have now.”

Current Building Trades student Camden Davis wrote, “Mr. Cochran has inspired me to start my own construction business in a few years and I hope that I can become half the carpenter that Mr. Cochran is.”
