‘Book in the Bluff’ fundraiser announced

Tuesday, July 30, 2024

For the fifth year, the Book in the Bluff series is set to raise funds to benefit the Poplar Bluff Public Library going forward; and the prize for the fundraiser should appeal to Cardinals fans.

Winners will receive a ticket to go see the St. Louis Cardinals take on the Seattle Mariners is St. Louis on Sept. 8. The ticket is a $50 value, and the chance to win is $20. The ticket also comes with a jumbo hot dog and a soda at the baseball game. Tickets are available for purchase at both Poplar Bluff Public Library locations: 318 N Main St and 3398 Kanell Blvd. There will be multiple ticket winners announced between now and the Sept. 8 game.

“This is all to help the library and get more people more involved with the Book in the Bluff,” explained Friends of the Library President Joyce Whitworth. “We’re really looking for to seeing what will happen.”

Library Director Shannon Midyett explained the book being featured during the Book in the Bluff is named “Remarkably Bright Creatures,” a New York Times bestseller by Shelby Van Pelt.

“Shelby Van Pelt will be here to speak at the Tinnin (Fine Arts) Center on Sept. 10,” Midyett remarked. “And having this book as part of our campaign this year is a really good fit. Plus, it’s an excellent book about a widowed woman who starts working at an aquarium and befriends a curmudgeonly octopus; and how they end up helping each other get through that phase in their lives.”

Midyett encouraged patrons to read “Remarkably Bright Creatures,” and to get involved with the Book in the Bluff’s events.

The event is sponsored by Sterling Bank. Patrons can borrow this year’s featured book “Remarkably Bright Creatures” from the library in both physical and electronic forms.
