Poplar Bluff firefighters rescued four people and their pets Wednesday morning from a flooding home on Tremont Street.

According to Poplar Bluff Fire Chief Mike Moffitt, firefighters using the department’s rescue boat were dispatched to 1452 Tremont St. Four people and their four dogs were stranded in their home. Water already was in the house.

Capt. Jon Miller and Lt. Travis Taylor took the boat in to rescue them.

“The house is not going to be livable immediately,” Moffitt said “We assisted them through the Red Cross.”

At the time, a vehicle was floating on Ida Street near Tremont Street but no one was in the car, Moffitt said.

Fire crews also responded to Oakdale Caring Center to assist Emergency medical services, who were having trouble transferring a patient. The EMS crew was able to safely evacuate the patient through the flood water, Moffitt said.

Fire crews were first dispatched to a vehicle stranded on Spring Street. By the time they arrived, the person was out of the vehicle.

Moffitt said, these incidents happened this morning during what he considered a record-setting rain.

Off duty firefighters Joshua Butler and Austin Armes were called into work.
