With the fast-approaching solar eclipse on April 8, the Poplar Bluff Library has a packed list of events for enthusiasts of all ages.

“There are lots of great things going on for the eclipse and we wanted to be a part of that,” Adult Services Librarian Alora Bauer elaborated.

Meteorologist Joe Rao, an eclipse chaser of 50 years, contacted the library to set up a speaking event on March 23. Bauer said this sparked ideas for more activities.

The next item on the calendar is a seminar on how to make rockets out of recycled materials on Saturday. On March 17, the library will host “Science Sunday” for children to learn about space rocks.

Partnering with the Public Library Information Exchange, there will be a presentation on how astronauts cook and eat in zero gravity on March 26t.

Throughout March and April, both the main and Ridgel locations will host a Galaxy of Horrors exhibit.

The display will educate attendees on, “some of the most terrifying and mind-blowing destinations in our galaxy... and beyond.”

For the eclipse itself, the Ridgel location will host a viewing party with crafts and lawn games. Viewing glasses will be provided for free while supplies last. Bauer encouraged participants to bring their own chairs.

She affirmed a large amount of community interest in the library’s roster of activities. Bauer lauded the efforts of the programming team and expressed excitement over the library’s role in helping the public experience the unique astronomic event.
