Butler County Retired Teachers and School Personnel recently helped fund a project for Neelyville Elementary teacher Susan Cooper. Cooper had sought financial help through Donors Choose, a national organization that empowers public school teachers to request much-needed materials for their students. Cooper’s request focused on encouraging her third graders in reading, using reading incentives, Scholastic News magazines, writing skills books, flashlights for Flashlight Friday reading as well as rewards to focus on positive behavior.

Butler County Retired Teachers President Linda Surber stated, “One goal of the local unit of retired teachers is to support active teachers. Teachers have a very challenging job, and retirees want to support local teachers. This is the third consecutive year that local retirees have committed financial resources to help county public school teachers.”

In addition, the local unit awards a $500 scholarship each year to a county high school senior planning to major in education.

The Butler County unit meets the third Wednesday of even numbered months at 11 a.m. at Castello’s. The next meeting will be Wednesday, December 20. Teachers and support personnel are invited to attend.
