It is both a privilege and a duty to recognize the brave men and women who have selflessly served our nation in the U.S. Armed Forces. Veterans Day, celebrated on Nov. 11, offers an opportunity to express our gratitude to these heroes who have safeguarded our freedom and protected the American way of life. In this column, I want to pay tribute to veterans, including my father, a World War II veteran, and share my family’s personal journey of service.
One of the most profound sources of pride in my life is my father, Arvel W. Billington Jr., a second class petty officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II. His remarkable service included participating in the crucial landing of troops in Sicily, Italy, and France. Enlisting in the navy in March 1942, he underwent boot training at Great Lakes, and in March 1943, he was assigned to an LST (Landing Ship, Tank).
One of the defining moments of his service came during the Sicily invasion when his ship was the first to hit the beach. This act of valor was a testament to his courage and the unwavering dedication of the entire crew. It was a foreshadowing of the trials they would face in the coming years.
Later, at Salerno, his ship was damaged, a reminder of the risks they encountered in every operation. However, their most remarkable achievement was participating in the historic D-Day landings on the coasts of Normandy. Their landing, by all accounts, was a success. But the challenges they faced were far from over.
In the days following the Normandy landings, a fierce storm lashed the shore, leading to a collision with another LST and severe damage to their vessel. Their commitment and resilience were evident as they weathered this storm, both figuratively and literally. Despite the damage, they pressed on, ultimately playing a vital role in ferrying supplies across the English Channel until December 1944 when my father finally returned home to the United States.
As the son of a World War II veteran, I understand the sacrifices made by those who serve, as well as the impact on their families. My father’s stories have left a deep impression on me, and his service remains a source of inspiration.
I’m also proud to have a brother who is a Vietnam veteran. His service during a tumultuous time in our nation’s history reflects the unflinching dedication of those who served during the Vietnam War. It’s important to acknowledge the unique challenges and sacrifices faced by our Vietnam veterans and ensure they receive the recognition and support they deserve.
Furthermore, I’m deeply honored to have served 12 years in the Army National Guard. This experience allowed me to gain a profound understanding of the commitment and sacrifices our servicemen and women make daily. It’s an experience that has shaped my life and my dedication to supporting veterans’ issues.
Today, my family’s tradition of service continues as my grandson serves in Ft. Campbell, Kentucky, reinforcing our legacy of patriotism. I am immensely proud of him and his dedication to our nation’s security.
As we come together this Veterans Day, let us remember the selflessness and bravery of those who have served and continue to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces. Let us also recognize the contributions of their families, who share in their sacrifices. This day is a reminder that our freedom is a result of their dedication and unwavering service. It is our duty to honor, support, and express our appreciation for these heroes.
May God bless and keep you and our great nation.
