This week’s MAIN EVENT has a little bit of everything, including a car show, a charity banquet and a chance to watch one of the year’s best meteor showers.

This Friday, people can support St. Jude at the St. Jude 8th Annual VIP Banquet, which kicks off at 5 p.m. at the Black River Coliseum. The banquet features dinner, live and silent auctions, games and raffles. Tickets are $50 and reserved table is $575.

Not far from there — on Vine Street between Fifth and Broadway — is the Rockin’ Cruise In, which kicks off at 5:30 p.m. Friday and runs until 9 p.m., featuring a car show and live music.

Saturday evening offers the chance to view the Perseid metor shower, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Big Spring. The Perseids are traditionally one of the year’s best meteor showers, often featuring 60-100 meteors per hour.

— Rockin’ Cruise In, 5:30-9 p.m. Aug. 11. WHERE Vine Street between Fifth and Broadway. COST Free admission. WHAT A car show, live music from Jon Murphy and adult beverages.

— St. Jude 8th Annual VIP Banquet, 5 p.m. Aug. 11. WHERE Black River Coliseum. COST $50 per ticket, $575 for a reserved table of 10. WHAT St. Jude’s yearly benefit banquet is back with dinner, live and silent auctions, games and raffles. — Back-to-school clothing drive, 11 a.m. Aug. 12. WHERE Black River General Baptist Church, 9606 Highway AA, Broseley. COST Free. WHAT The church will be doing a back-to-school clothing giveaway for Twin Rivers students.

— Perseid Meteor Shower Viewing, 7:30 p.m. Aug. 12. WHERE Big Spring, Ozark National Scenic Riverways. COST Free. WHAT Take advantage of the Ozarks’ dark skies and see the peak of this meteor shower! This shower boasts 60-100 meteors per hour. In addition, a special night sky program will be presented by rangers. Bring bug spray, chairs, and flashlights. Telescopes and binoculars are also welcome for stargazing, but are not recommended for viewing meteors.

— Music for the Mind, a music and camping festival, 5 p.m. Aug. 18 and 5 p.m. Aug. 19. WHERE The Camp at Lake Wappapello. COST $30 for a one-day pass online, $35 cash only at the gate. WHAT Music for the Mind is a two-day music and camping festival. Proceeds promote mental health and help those in need.

— Overdose Awareness Event, 11 a.m. Aug. 19. WHERE McLane Park. COST Free. WHAT An awareness and support event for families who have lost loved ones to drug overdoses. Attendees are encouraged to bring a photo of lost loved ones. A memorial plaque for Laramie Goodluck will be dedicated. Bounce houses and food trucks will be on site.

— Cheer and stunt clinics, noon Aug. 19. WHERE Poplar Bluff Cheer and Tumbling, 609 Sycamore St. COST Each clinic is $25; pair two clinics together and get $5 off. WHAT Three clinics will be offered — a cheer clinic, a group stunt clinic and an advanced stunt clinic.

— Lake St. Louis Ski Club, noon Aug. 19. WHERE Redman Creek Recreation Area, Lake Wappapello. COST Free. WHAT A team of more than 50 waterskiiers will put on a show.

— 4-H Animal Art Exhibit opening reception 6-8 p.m. Aug. 31 WHERE Margaret Harwell Art Museum COST Free WHAT The show will continue through Sept. 12.
