Lane has been part of the Poplar Bluff Fire Department since 2002. After graduating from Poplar Bluff High School, he joined the U.S. Navy. He served during Desert Storm and Desert Shield on a landing support amphibious ship, which enabled more than 300 marines to go on shore where there were no docks or piers.

After his military service, Lane made his home in Maryland, where he volunteered with the Harris County Fire Department, which served areas between Baltimore City and Washington D.C. He later was hired to full time to work with the department.

Because of his mother getting sick, he and his wife, Theresa, decided to move to Poplar Bluff so they could raise their son in a smaller community. When Lane was hired by the fire department, he moved his family to Poplar Bluff.
