Abby Murphy, a recent Poplar Bluff graduate, is the recipient of the Poplar Bluff Fine Arts Club Scholarship.
The scholarship, which is valued at $500, was presented in the form of a check to Murphy by Susan Wilson, the treasurer of PBFAC and Jo Nell Seifert, club member and retired Poplar Bluff High School drama instructor.
To secure the funds, Murphy explained she underwent a comprehensive application process. “I had to explain different aspects of what I do academically, club-wise and how I’ve been a part of the fine arts throughout high school, as well as write an essay attachment of how fine arts has basically helped me get to where I am now and how I’m going to use it in the future,” she said.
Murphy expressed her aspirations to pursue film studies at the University of Missouri with the ultimate goal of becoming a director.
She emphasized her desire to collaborate with her home community.“My hope is to become a director and work with the community, as I’ve been a part of the community and drama forever,” said Murphy.
The $500 scholarship is only a small fraction of the remarkable $37,000 in scholarship funds Murphy said she has amassed so far. This financial support has been crucial in fueling her educational pursuits, she stated.
“I’ve had to work hard for every scholarship I earned, so it’s a combination of relief and pride that I was able to accomplish this. It feels like a full-circle moment for me,” Murphy said.
Established in 1950, the Poplar Bluff Fine Arts Club has been dedicated to promoting and fostering artistic endeavors in the community, according to members.
According to Wilson, the club’s treasurer, PBFAC has been providing scholarships throughout its existence.
“We don’t have a fundraiser; our dues go towards our scholarship,” Wilson explained.
She further noted the club is open to individuals of all ages who share a passion for the fine arts. PBFAC membership includes world travelers, bibliophiles and frequent visitors to cultural venues like the Fox Theatre.
Wilson explained they discuss these cultural events as well as many other topics of interest during club meetings.
