The Incredible, Edible Book Contest returned to the Poplar Bluff Municipal Library on Saturday afternoon.
The contest, used as a fundraiser for the Friends of the Poplar Bluff Public Library, encourages contestants to use edible materials to create an entry related to a book title. All entries were required to be at least 90% edible, although the taste was not a factor in judging.
“Events like the Incredible Edible Contest allow our community to engage with books and reading and with the library, while raising funds for prizes and events that expand the library’s reach,” said library Director Shanon Midyett in a press release.
All funds raised for the contest are used to support the Poplar Bluff library’s programs, such as reading programs, author events, children’s events, teen events and other family-related events.
The People’s Choice winner was “Finding Daisies” by the MF Chapter of the PEO. The entry was sponsored by Vickie Perry, Kim Duncan and Mary Libla.
According to Perry, her group’s entry was a book of poetry, “Finding Daisies,” written by a lady who had trouble within her life.
“She explains these troubles and tribulations through the book of poetry and her healing,” Perry said, of the green and white cake, which features magnifying glasses resting by yellow and white daisies.
The overall winner was Olivia Dixon for her entry of “The Hobbit.”
Dixon said her main concern was with the overall design of the cake. The base was designed to have the texture of book pages, while the top includes the opening lines of the book, with a foot path leading to the Hobbit’s grass covered home where yellow butterflies rest.
“It didn’t really work very much on the flavoring. We just mostly focused on the decorating,” she said.
