Spire Natural Gas Company created a “Day of Good” for their employees, which benefited seniors who receive home delivery of meals from Northside Nutrition.

While it was the first time for the nutrition center to partner with a company in this way, Administrator Emily LeMaster said the help was very much appreciated.

Northside delivers 120 senior food boxes each month to area residents in need of assistance with nutritional meals.

During the “Day of Good,” Spire employees donated a day of their time to assist the community in whatever needs they might have.

They helped load and deliver the senior boxes Wednesday.

According to Spire Operations Supervisor Steve McNeal, “All of the states or areas that we’re in, they pick a select group, I’m one of them, and then we target areas and try to help out wherever that might be.”

Some future projects, McNeal said the group would likely be assisting with are, “some painting for the nutrition center. For Haven House, we’re going to be power washing all their buildings and then possibly adding some picnic tables, maybe some raised garden beds. We’ll see. It’s kind of a work in progress,” said McNeal.

Spire’s ‘Day of Good’ is about community engagement, according to McNeal, who said they want to make their presence known in the communities they serve.

The senior food boxes are provided by the Southeast Missouri Food Bank, according to a previous interview. They prepare around 5,300 boxes a month to be delivered to the 16 Southeast Missouri counties they serve.

The senior boxes are filled with staple foods. Seniors 60 years old or older only need to fill out a form to see if they meet the income guidelines to receive the boxes which are distributed once a month. The form for the Commodity Supplemental Food Program can be located at www.health.mo.gov/living/wellness/nutrition/foodprograms/csfp/.
