Ag Connect is an annual conference designed to connect and recognize those who are active in the agriculture industry.

During the conference, local 4-H and Future Farmers of America programs are celebrated for their contribution to agriculture, as well as their continuing efforts to reconnect farmers to their roots, according to the University of Missouri Butler County Extension, which organizes the event.

Every year, the conference gives out awards and offers classes that provide information on livestock, technology, farm management, and FFA classes among other things.

At this year’s event, farmers and youth from around the area attended to show off some of their accomplishments, exchange stories and learn the importance of farming.

A special dinner is also held on the second day of the event to honor the outstanding ag leaders of the year.

This year’s recognitions go to: Outstanding Farm Family, Chad and Megan Buttrey, and their daughters, Amelia and Hailey; Outstanding Woman in Ag, Holly Yarbro; Outstanding Ag Business, Farm Credit Southeast Missouri; Outstanding Young Farmer, Joey Knapp; and Outstanding Student in Ag, Carter Lewis.

“It is important to recognize those in the agriculture industry as it is a large part of our community,” Extension engagement specialist John Fuller has said. “Agriculture is part of our roots here in Southeast Missouri.”

This is a small recognition for the people who are making large contributions to this community, he believes.

Ag Connect is being held at the Black River Coliseum with classes Friday for industry members and community activities scheduled for Saturday, including an intro to selling food locally, live demonstrations and crafts for children.
