Poplar Bluff firefighters answered three reported structure fires Saturday and Sunday.
Firefighters responded at 3:43 p.m. Saturday to a structure at 117 S. B St. and spent more than hour putting out the fire.
Upon arrival firefighters observed smoke coming from the rear of the structure, but a resident said he thought he had the fire out. The crew found little fire but there was quite a bit of smoke coming out of the structure at the bottom. The crew sprayed the fire with water, but it had spread up the wall.
One firefighter got the booster line and tried to pull the ceiling so they could look into the attic. The ceiling was wood and they had to use a chainsaw to make entry.
Smoke conditions were getting heavier and according to the fire reports, the residents were returning to the house. Having a hard time getting to the fire, Engine 22 crew lay a supply line. Firefighters requested a call back crew to stand by at Station 3.
Firefighters called for police to keep the residents out of the house. Once all three stations were able to work the fire was quickly extinguished. The fire was confined to the room of origin.
After talking with the police, firefighters allowed the residents Tabitha Cody and Cynthia Penn to go into the house to get clothes.
Firefighters used 100 gallons of water on the scene.
Shortly after leaving the B Street fire, crews were called at 5:17 p.m. to 924 Ivadene to a structure fire. When they arrived they found a house that had previously burned but an individual had a fire burning in the fireplace for heat. They informed the occupant he could not stay in the house. They called police to remove the individual and extinguished the fire.
At 7:09 p.m. Sunday firefighter were dispatched to a reported structure fire at Marion Eye Center. Upon arrival light smoke was visible in the building. Firefighters and Spire tried to turn off the gas but could not.
Firefighters made forcible entry since the key holder was 20 minutes away. A rug in the entryway was smoldering and fire had spread to a desk located next to the rug.
Firefighters believe a ceiling light fixture located directly above the rug shorted out. When it shorted out and broke hot embers fell and ignited. A water can extinguisher was used to cool the embers. The attic space was checked for fire and none was found, The building was allowed to air out on its own. The building was turned over to the key holder.
The building is owned by Magbool Attmad.
