If you enjoy backyard barbecue, poker runs and good causes, you might try this week’s MAIN EVENT, the Fourth Annual Cookoff For A Cure and the Fifth Annual Jessica’s Journey Off Road Poker Run at Campbell.
Hosted by the Knights of Columbus, these events kick off at 8 a.m. Saturday at 12936 CR-116.
Proceeds from these events will help area families fighting cancer.
There is a $50 entry fee per team, however a person can be on more than one team to try different recipes, according to organizers. Categories include pork ribs and chicken, including any style of pork rib or any piece of chicken.
Meats cannot be marinated before check in and must be displayed at registration for proof, competition rules state.
Registration starts at 8 a.m., with turn in at 5 p.m.
All entries will be judged on taste, tenderness and appearance of the meat, organizers said.
The event is held in coordination with the Fifth Annual Jessica’s Journey Off Road Poker Run, which takes place at the same time.
Entry fee for this is $30 per person, regardless if they are riding or driving and no one under the age of 16 will be allowed on either ride. Registration for the first ride starts at 8 a.m. and it leaves at 9 a.m. Registration for the second ride begins at 10 a.m. and it leaves at 11 a.m. A winner will be awarded from each ride, with the prizes being a Savage Axis .308.
Entry fee for the poker run includes a meal ticket for the 6 p.m. dinner. Tickets for the dinner will also be available at the door.
Hamburgers and chips will also be sold at lunch time. Multiple raffles are also planned for this full day event.

— Viking shield craft day, 10 am.-2 p.m. Aug. 27. WHERE The Stars and Stripes National Museum and Library, Bloomfield. COST Free. WHAT Visitors will get their viking on and create foam shields similar to what these legendary Norse warriors used. Very limited supplies available. Craft will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
— Naylor High School Class of 2010 Reunion, 6 p.m. Aug. 27. WHERE Haffy’s Sports Bar & Grill. COST Food priced according to Haffy’s menu. WHAT The Naylor Class of 2010 will celebrate a belated “10 year” reunion in the private room upstairs that also offers balcony space and a personal bartender. Food and drink can be purchased after arrival and each person is responsible for their own tab. This event is adults only.
— Artist Showcase, 7 p.m. Aug. 27. WHERE The American Legion in Poplar Bluff. COST $10 admission. Vendor slots are $50. WHAT Musical performances by Dez Pro, Hypeman Jones and Shynique Clay. Raffle giveaways for three free studio sessions, three video shoots and five photo shoots with SGI Records, plus three free beats produced by DezPro. Events includes a $100 twerk contest.
