A man was killed and two more were injured in a pair of accidents in Southeast Missouri over the weekend.

The first accident occurred at 11 p.m. Friday in Reynolds County on Highway H, four miles east of Highway 21.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Conrad A. Lurz, 31, of Ellington was operating a 2008 Pontiac G6 eastbound when it ran off the road and struck a tree.

Lurz sustained minor injuries and sought his own medical treatment, but a passenger in his vehicle, Michael L. Vrabel, 26, of Scott City, sustained serious injuries and was transported by Reynolds County Ambulance to Iron County Medical Center in Pilot Knob.

The second accident occurred at 7:59 p.m. Saturday on Highway 72, three miles west of Patton in Bollinger County.

According to the MSHP, Walter L. Hawkes, 61, of Patton was operating a 2007 Harley Davidson eastbound when it ran off the road, struck an embankment and ejected Hawkes.

Hawkes was pronounced dead at the scene by Bollinger County assistant coroner Megan Cook at 8:38 p.m. Saturday. His body was transported to Hutchings Funeral Home in Marble Hill.

Hawkes is the 18th fatality in Troop E this year.
