One person is dead after a police-involved shooting just after midnight early Wednesday on Highway 53, just south of McDonald’s.

“The Poplar Bluff Police Department responded to a burglar alarm at a business in Poplar Bluff,” said Missouri State Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Sgt. Clark Parrott.

“Officers were confronted by an individual with a weapon in a threatening manner,” Parrott said. “Officers discharged their weapons, striking the subject.”

That person, Parrott said, was pronounced dead, but the male subject’s name is not yet being released. Butler County Coroner Jim Akers confirmed his office is part of the investigation.

No officers, Police Chief Danny Whiteley said, were injured in the incident.

The Poplar Bluff Police Department, Parrott said, requested the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control investigate the officer-involved incident.

Per Poplar Bluff Police Department policy, Parrott said, the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues.

“We have four officers on paid administrative leave, which is department and CALEA (Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies) routine policy,” said Whiteley.
