The Poplar Bluff Historic Depot Restoration Committee will host a quilt and apron show Saturday, Oct. 30, with displays, raffles and other activities.

“Making quilts has been around for more years than any of us can remember. Grandma used scraps of left-over clothes to make the family warmer in winter. Today, many of the quilts are truly works of art,” said Stephanie Knoppe, president of the Poplar Bluff Historic Depot board.

The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the depot, with set up starting at 7 a.m. Admission is $1.

Visitors will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite quilts.

“We’ve asked everybody to come in that we knew of that did quilting in this area,” said organizer Nancy Francis, who is helping with the quilt show, along with Marge VanPraag. “This will help also let the community know the historic train depot is being restored for their benefit too. We want to hold weddings (and other events) in the old depot as well.”

This is the first time the depot board has held a quilt show, said Francis, a longtime quilter herself, who plans to bring some of her own work.

A 1940’s “Crazy Quilt” will be on display for silent auction and a beautiful “Deer Quilt” will be raffled. Some craft vendors are also planning to set up.

“We are really looking forward to building this up so we can have a quilt show every year,” Francis said.

The group would like to interest quilters not just from the Poplar Bluff area, but also the 50-mile radius.

“This show will be an opportunity to explore interest you may have in learning to quilt,” Knoppe said in a press release.

Members of the Missouri Star Quilt Guild are also going to participate. Other quilting guilds in the area include the Bootheel Quilters Guild from Sikeston. Organizers said Sew Much More in Poplar Bluff and Sue’s Quilt Shop in Piedmont also offer quilting supplies and information on quilting.
