ST. LOUIS — Incarnate Word scored five runs in the fifth inning Friday night to rally past Poplar Bluff 10-8 at the Rockwood Summit Tournament.

The Mules opened the season with an 11-0 loss to Rock Bridge earlier Friday.

In the nightcap, Breann Thresher had two hits and scored twice while Adrianne Casey drove in a pair of runs and Madelyn Hefner doubled.

Clara Rahlmann, Ella Zgaynor, Kennedy Zgaynor and Morgan Courtney each singled. Ashtyn Reese reached twice and scored while Lauren Webb also scored after drawing a walk.

The Mules were up 8-5 after a six-run third.

Thresher had two of Poplar Bluff’s four hits in the opener against Rock Bridge, which won the Class 5 title last year at 29-0 and returns three starters.

Thresher tripled in the third with one out but was left stranded after a strikeout and grounder to third. The senior led off the first with a single and was stranded at third after Rahlmann’s one-out single and a wild pitch. The inning ended after with a pair of strikeouts. Casey had a one-out hit in the fourth.

Rock Bridge scored a run in the first inning with consecutive two-out hits and added a three-run second inning. Leading 6-0 after four, Rock Bridge added five runs in the fifth on four hits and a pair of walks.

__SOCCER__ The Mules opened the season with a 4-0 loss to Belleville (Ill.) East at a tournament in Carbondale, Illinois.

Junior keeper Dawson Vaughan made 18 saves in the loss.

Poplar Bluff plays Anna-Jonesboro (Ill.) at 10 a.m. and host Carbondale (Ill.) at 2 p.m. Saturday.
